John frequently speaks to and leads workshops for plant societies, gardening groups and other horticultural, ecological and educational organizations.
Popular talks include:
- Gardens as Habitat - a step by step discussion of all the elements needed to create a welcoming, nurturing landscape for birds, pollinators people and more. The talk is vibrantly illustrated with John's photography of gardens large and small which he has designed and built with just these goals in mind.
- Gardening with Natives - Natives bring a bonding sense of place and seasonality to any garden, but native plant gardening can sometimes be daunting for beginners and amateurs alike. This fully illustrated talk walks gardeners wanting to create this sense of place through how to choose, plant and maintain an interesting diversity of native plants well-suited for your space, soil and exposure. (John contributes a bi-monthly article on gardening with natives to the Pipevine, the monthly newsletter of the Mt. Lassen Chapter of the California Native Plant Society. To read more, click here.)
- Reconsidering the Lawn - Lawns can be attractive areas for gathering and playing, but they are just as often high-maintenace, expensive default choices in the landscape. In this vividly illustrated talk, John goes over the nuts and bolts of transforming default areas of lawn into welcoming garden oases.
-
Salvias - Salvia is a very large genera of over 900 species and includes some of our most fragrant and floriferous natives as well as wonderfully adapted non-natives for the home garden. Requiring relatively little water and maintenance, salvias can provide year-round interest to any garden. In this engaging talk based on years of propagating, selling and gardening with Salvias, John shares his experience and passion for these plants in this talk.
